FOR BUSINESS LEADERS
Business value
Give controller-change observations an accountable engineering review before drawing a business conclusion.
What to ask
Was the activity approved, what equipment was involved, and what supporting project or maintenance evidence is available?
Important boundary
A network observation alone does not prove that the controller accepted a change or that the physical process was affected.
| Protocol family | Siemens S7 communication |
|---|---|
| Review context | Peer identity, block/address, maintenance approval and response |
| Important boundary | Write observation does not establish controller acceptance or physical effect |
A block address needs plant context
A decoded write request can be useful evidence, but its physical meaning depends on the actual project, CPU configuration and engineering mapping. A field such as DB10, byte offset 4 should remain an address until the responsible engineer confirms what it represents. The website demonstration uses invented fields and does not identify a real Siemens installation.
Keep permission separate from protocol semantics
Siemens documents GET and PUT instructions for remote CPU data access, with configuration and security requirements that depend on the CPU and project. That documentation is not a reason to enable access during a monitoring pilot. A passive observation exercise must not change controller protection settings or send test writes to production machinery.
Record the observed peer pair, timestamp, parser provenance and available request/response fields. Check the approved engineering workstation, work order and maintenance window with the asset owner. Distinguish an attempted operation, an observed protocol response and independently confirmed process behaviour.
Coverage must be demonstrated
OTCogniShield does not claim universal S7 write detection. The exact protocol variant, firmware family and message fields need capture-backed validation. A synthetic warning card demonstrates a proposed review workflow; it is not evidence that a deployed parser or policy has passed acceptance.
A bounded test plan
Use an authorised offline capture or isolated test environment. Include normal traffic, an explicitly defined policy deviation and missing-field cases. Check finding text, timestamps, evidence export and recovery. Do not treat a successful screen demonstration as production acceptance.
